There is some good and bad news about minerals and vitamins: The fantastic thing is that ingestion of certain vitamins and minerals is linked with a lower risk of premature death. The good thing is that this connection is observed only when these nutrients are derived from foods, not supplements, according to another study.

“Our results support the concept that… you will find favorable associations with nutrition from foods which are not seen with nutritional supplements,” senior study writer Dr. Fang Fang Zhang, an associate professor in the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Massachusetts,” stated in a statement.

What is more, consuming large doses of some nutrients through supplements may be damaging — the researchers found that getting elevated levels of vitamin calcium in supplements was connected to an increased chance of death from cancer.

The study examined data from over 27,000 adults at the U.S. ages 20 and upwards who participate in a nationwide health survey between 1999 and 2010. However, if the researchers believed the origin of those nutrients — meals versus nutritional supplements — just nutrients from meals were associated with a lesser chance of death from some other cause or cardiovascular disease.

Additionally, the analysis found that consuming high levels of calcium in supplements — 1,000 mg daily — has been connected to a greater chance of death from cancer. However, there was no connection between the ingestion of calcium in food and danger of death from cancer.

The findings indicated that”sufficient nutrient intake from foods has been associated with decreased mortality, [while] surplus intake from supplements might be detrimental,” the investigators concluded.

Nonetheless, the researchers noticed that they did not objectively measure what participants swallowed, but rather relied upon their own self-reports, which might not be completely accurate.
