There is some good and bad news about minerals and vitamins: The fantastic thing is that ingestion of certain vitamins and minerals is linked with a lower risk of premature death. The good thing is that this connection is observed only when these nutrients are derived from foods, not supplements, according to another study.
“Our results support the concept that… you will find favorable associations with nutrition from foods which are not seen with nutritional supplements,” senior study writer Dr. Fang Fang Zhang, an associate professor in the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Massachusetts,” stated in a statement.
What is more, consuming large doses of some nutrients through supplements may be damaging — the researchers found that getting elevated levels of vitamin calcium in supplements was connected to an increased chance of death from cancer.
The analysis is published Monday (April 8) from the journal analysis of Internal Medicine. Food vs. supplements
The study examined data from over 27,000 adults at the U.S. ages 20 and upwards who participate in a nationwide health survey between 1999 and 2010. For the survey, interviewers asked participants about the things they ate in the previous 24 hours, and if they had taken nutritional supplements in the previous 30 days. Participants were then monitored for approximately six decades, normally.
Throughout the analysis interval, roughly 3,600 people died; and of them, 945 expired from heart disorder and 805 died from cancer.
The analysis found that those who consume sufficient quantities of vitamin K or calcium had a significantly lesser chance of death from any cause during the study period, compared to individuals who did not find sufficient levels of these nutrients. Additionally, those who have sufficient levels of vitamin A vitamin K, zinc or vitamin had a lower chance of death from cardiovascular disease, compared with people who did not find sufficient levels of these nutrients.
However, if the researchers believed the origin of those nutrients — meals versus nutritional supplements — just nutrients from meals were associated with a lesser chance of death from some other cause or cardiovascular disease.
Additionally, the analysis found that consuming high levels of calcium in supplements — 1,000 mg daily — has been connected to a greater chance of death from cancer. However, there was no connection between the ingestion of calcium in food and danger of death from cancer.
The findings indicated that”sufficient nutrient intake from foods has been associated with decreased mortality, [while] surplus intake from supplements might be detrimental,” the investigators concluded.
Nonetheless, the researchers noticed that they did not objectively measure what participants swallowed, but rather relied upon their own self-reports, which might not be completely accurate. Future research should continue to analyze the possible dangers and benefits of nutritional supplements. The Dangers of nutritional supplements
The new study is not the first to connect supplement usage with damaging outcomes. In 2011, a large study found that utilization of vitamin E supplements has been connected to an increased risk of prostate cancer in guys. Also that year, another study among elderly women found that utilization of supplements has been connected to an increased probability of passing throughout the 20-year research interval.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics urges that folks attempt to obtain their nutrients from foods by eating a nutritious diet which includes polyunsaturated foods. The academy points out that foods may contain valuable components that are not found nutritional supplements, like fiber or bioactive substances.
“Real food includes healthful things a pill can not give us” that the academy says. “When we have a nutritional supplement from food and focus it into a pill, it is not quite the exact same thing.”
However, people with specific diseases or conditions might be unable to receive all the nutrients they need from food and consequently may want to have a nutritional supplement. By way of instance, pregnant girls often will need to take folic acid or iron supplements to prevent birth defects and assist the developing fetus. Individuals with specific food allergies or gastrointestinal ailments may also have to take nutritional supplements.
